Following the steppe Silk Road from Beijing to Rome.

On 10 March 2016, I set out alone, returning to Taiwan on 6 July. The journey lasted nearly four months. At its heart was landscape photography following the steppe Silk Road, and I gave the work a direct title: Journey From Beijing to Rome.

What do the cities along the old Silk Road look like today? Marco Polo travelled from west to east, describing the cities he encountered. If we travelled in the other direction, looking through an Eastern cultural perspective, how might the same landscapes appear differently?

These questions prompted the journey and stayed with me as I photographed. The landscape before the camera meets the traveller’s position as an observer. The photographs record what I encountered while keeping open the question of how we come to understand another place.

A solo photography journey, 10 March–6 July 2016.
