Portraits of plants in city alleys, open ground beside farmland and cracks in rocks, made before they are uprooted.

Still and moving images with handwritten text observe military sites along the edges of Nangan and Beigan, Matsu, and their relationships with time and nature.

A collaboration by Ching-Huan Chang and Chia-Sheng Wang, using fieldwork, photographs, lightboxes and booklets to examine how Madou is recorded and classified.

Oral accounts, site visits and photography trace the visible and remembered landscapes of industry and community in Madou.
From individual lives to a shared neighbourhood narrative. A photographic novel created with people connected to Siwen.

Read the note“For me, photography is a process, method or tool for pursuing truth or progress. It is one means of artistic expression, while also inherently possessing a documentary quality.”Ching-Huan Chang, Concepts · translated excerpt
Three readings developed from the works.
A photograph preserves an encounter and opens a question. From Human and Nature to the military sites of Matsu, direction, position and distance become part of what an image asks us to consider.
Human and NatureDovecotes, orchards and old buildings are not isolated objects. Read alongside oral accounts, categories and spatial histories, landscapes reveal relationships built between people and places over time.
Madou Archive PhotographyThe Gentle People of Siwen brings daily experiences into a photographic novel. Image-making becomes a shared process in which who tells a story, and how they are seen, matters as much as the photograph.
