Representation of Landscape
心中地景的再現
Oral accounts, site visits and photography trace the visible and remembered landscapes of industry and community in Madou.
Tracing connections between remembered places and the scenes before us.
We often use maps to understand a place and trace how its spaces have changed. Photography returns us to a human viewpoint, allowing us to look again at the relationships between people, industry, community and landscape.
Representation of Landscape follows elders’ accounts and searches for the places they recall, tracing connections between memory and the landscape before us. Photographing becomes a way of measuring the textures and relationships between people and place. Some remain visible; others can be approached through the accounts people share.
Handwritten texts and portraits are placed alongside landscape photographs in paired sequences. Reading moves from a person’s face and words to a scene, bringing visible and less visible experiences of place into relation through oral accounts and photography.
Work dated 2017; presented in Migratory Matters Exhibition (2017–2018), Tsung-Yeh Arts and Cultural Center, Tainan.
